Al-Qasr es un pueblo medieval otomano muy bien conservado que se encuentra en el oasis de Dakhla, uno de los más bonitos de Egipto. Este oasis es uno de los 5 que se encuentran en el Desierto Occidental egípcio y se puede llegar facilmente en bus desde el Cairo (de 8 a 10 horas) o aún mejor desde Asyut en el Valle del Nilo pasando por el desierto de Al-Kharga, que fue como yo hice. (para saber más sobre Al Kharga hacer click aquí) Hay un viaje de tan sólo 1 hora entre ambos oasis en taxi compartido o de aproximadamente 2 horas en bus.

Este pueblo tradicional musulmán, muy bien conservado y aún habitado, aunque no se ve a casi nadie en sus callecitas laberínticas, nos muestra como eran los pueblos de los oasis antiguamente, con sus casas de adobe.

La mayoría de las construcciones que podemos ver hoy en día datan del período Otomano (1516-1798). Se cree que probablemente antiguamente fue la capital del oasis, un lugar de mucha importancia. El tamaño de sus casas y decoraciones que aún persisten en las paredes nos dicen que fue un lugar habitado por personas acaudaladas.
Most of the buildings that we see today date from the Ottoman period (1516-1798). It is believed that probably once it was the capital of the oasis, a place of great importance. The size of their houses and decorations that remain still today on the walls tell us it was a place inhabited by wealthy people.
Las calles son muy angosta y muchas están techadas convirtiendolo en un intrincado laberinto que protegía a sus habitantes del sol y las tormentas de arena del desierto circundante.
The streets are very narrow and many are roofed making an intricate labyrinth that protected its inhabitants from the sun and sand storms from the surrounding desert.
Puertas y ventanas de madera con decoraciones aún se conservan intáctas, algunos lugares también han sido restaurados para recrear cómo se vivia en otros tiempos.
Wooden doors and windows with decorations still remain intact, some places have also been restored to recreate how they lived in the past.
Podemos entrar a algunas casas para ver cómo eran por dentro, muchos "muebles" eran hechos con el mismo adobe de las paredes.
We can enter to some homes to see how they were inside, many "furniture" were made with the same adobe material.
