The Salwar Kameez is a very comfortable dress worn by women in India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. Its origin is Muslim but today it is used by the entire population. SALWAR are the pants, which are very baggy but tight at the ankles. It is tied at the waist by a rope or elastic. The kameez is a long shirt near the knees with side vents.

This costume is combined with a DUPATTA which is a long scarf worn around the shoulders dropping back. The purpose of this attachment is to hide the bust. It also serves to cover the head. As told here in India women sometimes cover their heads as a sign of respect and for entering to the temples. Also for protecting themselves from the sun and dust.

Well, as a foreigner, I forgot the detail to cover my bust so here I show how the DUPATTA really should be placed:

On my first trip to India I took the liberty to use it sometimes without this accessory:
And combined too with hat! haha
As all female outfits from India and Nepal this dress is heavily decorated and there are thousands of possible combinations and colours. The fabrics used vary widely, from cotton to silk and gold thread. I bought mine in Amritsar (India) and it is made with embroidery cotton.

Hasta pronto...
Till then...
