El Lhasa Express (The Lhasa Express)

The train to Tibet from Beijing was opened in 2006. When the train enters to the Tibetan territory exceeds 4000 meters reaching the peak of 5072 meters in Tanggula. For this reason there are bottles of oxygen available to the passengers. It is the highest train in the world.

We took the train in Chengdu. Because of Chinese restrictions foreigners are only allowed to buy tickets in the compartments with couchettes. The economy seats can only be purchased by the Chinese and Tibetans. The Chinese who can afford also choose couchettes because the journey from Chengdu to Lhasa is 45 hours. But the Tibetans only may pay the economy seats. The couchettes are very comfortable, four in each compartment with sheets, pillows, window curtains and a rug. We had a table and an electric teapot, cup and tray. In China, electric kettle is a common accessory in the accommodation even more affordable.
On the couchettes there are commands to the lights and background music. The music (Chinese of course) can only be turned off when the train starts to move.
The Tibetan landscape is very lonely and wild. Sporadically we can see small groups of pastors. Upon entering the train they distribute a booklet telling us how to build this train was a "benefit to the Tibetans." Well, they just say the same regarding that great avenue built in front of the Potala.
In our train were travelling many military people to Lhasa. The capital of Tibet is saturated with Chinese military soldiers guarding the natives.
At the time of taking the train in Chengdu they asked us for our permission to enter to Tibet. Some tourists have said that they  have travelled without this permission imposed by the Chinese government to all foreigners who want to visit the "Forbidden Kingdom" but we had to show it several times in our journey through this legendary country.
