Si vas a la China y no hablas chino.... :) (if you go to China but you don´t know Chinese....:)

If we travel to China on our own without the help of an organized tour then we should take some precautions. In tourist hotels we always will find people who communicate in English but, if we go to a less touristy town they may speak only Chinese (in any of it version :) In my personal experience I noted that when a Chinese don´t speaks English means that person literally does not understand a single word of that language. Even such popular words as "yes" and "no" are incomprehensible to them. The same applies to the numbers in English. Those who to travel to many countries know that traders tend to understand the numbers in English even they are not fluent in this language. In China is not the case when we move away from the most popular tourist places. In addition, people do not try to help if they do not understand the language. They ignore you completely. Once I entered a small shop and asked something in English. The merchant simply waved me out of his shop. Sometimes taxi drivers do not want to stop. That is the opposite to other countries in Asia! :) Once I tried to ask in hotel how much will cost a room for me by pointing to myself with my fingers and then doing the typical gesture moving the fingers together when we want to ask "how much?" I thought it would be easy to understand for both young receptionists who watched me about what I could want to know but they did not. They couldn´t imagine at all about what I could want to know in their hotel. So I had no choice but to go off from there.

My recommendations based on my personal experience are:
No molestarse con la situación. No ponerse nervioso.
1 ° Do not bother with the situation. Do not get nervous. Remember that in China they speak Chinese and it is us who should understand them if we want to visit their country. I met many tourists quite upset because "the Chineses do not understand English" Remember that it is part of the adventure :)
Before travelling you must to learn some essential words as "xiexie" (thank you), "ni hao" (hello) and so on. On the Internet you can get lot of information.

Get a guidebook with the names of the places in Chinese characters. When we go somewhere using public transport is very useful to write the place name in Chinese on a piece of paper (it's easy!) Then you just have to show the note to someone and to get help quickly. They are very friendly if you use this system. But if we try to speak English and they do not understand is almost like to be talking to a wall. Most of the time they ignore us turning the face off  :)

4 ° IMPORTANT: many common signs that we use have no meaning for them. For example, our system (so obvious to us) about signing with the fingers to indicate the numbers is totally incomprehensible for most of them because they use another system of symbols very different. For avoiding this problem the best is  to have a pocket calculator with us. Write the number in question and show it to them. This system is better than to write with pen and paper because it also serves in case you want to ask a price, then we pass the calculator to the merchant and he can type it. In this way we avoid the problem that he will may write the numbers in Chinese (the system is totally different)
5 º Get a map of the city you are visiting. If possible, ask in the hotel about the place you want to visit and its location in the map.
6 ° If the city has subway is very easy to move without having to request information using a subway map.
It is very useful to carry a compass. The Chinese find their way around very easy with the 4 cardinal directions and seems that they have an internal compass. For Westerners it is not so easy to navigate in this way. In addition, many places you will visit have names that show you where to go such as "west gate", etc.. On leaving the metro is also easier to decide which exit to take if you know where is located the east, north, and so on.
8 ° In China some dishes are very spicy. If you do not want any surprise is very useful to have written on a paper in Chinese the phrase "non-spicy please" I got help from the receptionist at the hostel in Beijing. She wrote in a note the saving phrase for me :) Most of the people working in the small restaurants do not speak English so when I showed them this sentence written in Chinese then they showed me the no spicy dishes pointing with the finger in the menu. If you do not recognize the dishes you will eat at all at least you will know it will not be spicy!
9 ° In many restaurants the menu is written only in Chinese. But many have photos of the dishes which gives us an idea of what to ask for. If it is not the case the solution is to ask for "rice with eggs" or something else like this. You can have these words written in Chinese in case of emergencies in a small paper. In my experience when I had to use this system always I asked for rice with egg. They gave me a very tasty dish of rice seasoned with finely chopped herbs and eggs.

Of course, if we only visit the most famous tourist places and we don´t go out of them then we will find that shopkeepers speak good English and they can also communicate little bit in Spanish too  :) :)
