The gardens of the Middle Ages were modest size gardens placed in castles or monasteries. The access to the common people was difficult because they were enclosed by high walls. Besides the aesthetic enjoyment they had a very practical use: there were cultivated medicinal herbs, essential for Middle Age´s medicine, spices, fruits and vegetables for consumption. The flowers used to have a symbolic meaning and were chosen according to this symbolism.
The garden of Cluny Museum, the National Museum of the Middle Ages in Paris, located in the Latin Quarter, was created in 2000 to occupy the space where it should be the original garden. Numerous files and maps of the Middle Ages were used as inspiration for its creation but modern methods were also added to facilitate the visit and learning by visitors. Access is free.
