In this picture (found in Internet a time ago) you can see how the Chineses use their fingers to indicate the numbers from 1 to 10. You can see that some are very different than our Western system (which is incomprehensible to ordinary Chinese) To learn these signs, and if possible the names of numbers too, but with the signs is enough, it helps a lot the independent travels to China when we will do small purchases like a bottle of water at a kiosk, etc..

As you can read in more detail by clicking here , most Chinese do not speak English and they don´t understand the numbers in that language either. Our western signs so obvious to us, mean nothing to them and they will stare at you with no idea of what you're saying. Many times the calculator does not help, though it may seem strange, many do not even want to see it. Of course this will not happen in very large establishments visited by tourists. But small shops are not used to have us as customers and these Chinese do not have much patience with our language barrier, so it is best to make it a little easier for them and for us too :)
