Penedo

Penedo, a small town founded between 1535 and 1560, is 2 hours and a half from Maceio.

It is not visited by tourists very much making it more interesting. From Maceio there are some tours to Penedo, but as always, it's much cheaper to go by public transport. There are infrequent buses so it is better not to go to the bus station. The best option is a van service leaving every little while. These vans are leaving from a gas station a bit far from the most popular beaches. You have to take a bus to the gas station. Finding the van is quite easy as several to many destinations park next to the station. They are very comfortable and safe.

The town has a good number of colonial houses and baroque churches well preserved.

The San Francisco River is very important part of its history and landscape.

This restaurant offered us to eat "Jacare" ( a type of alligator common in South America) but we didn´t have the courage ja ja Lunch (fish) was very tasty.

                                                    yacaré...urgh!  :)

It is a day trip from Maceio that is worth if we are on our own and do not pay the excessive prices of the organized tours  :)

In this church a guide tells us the story of the town and how the slaves were hiding themselves at the back of a backdoor to win their freedom (in Portuguese)

The truth is that visiting this church is more than enough to make this two hours and a half trip to Penedo.
After the visit the van can be taken again near the bus station.

  1. This is really a beautiful Church in Penedo. Inside of architecture is really amazing. But it it looks like that the population of the city is very less as streets looks deserted and empty. Photos pasted on this blog narrates the beauti of the city. All the photos are nice...

    1. Well, this town don´t have the importance was having in the past so there is not much to do there. Most of people work in the field and come to the town for buying items returning to field after that. Young people go to city for studying... and because of strong sun at the time I took the photos people is not roaming outside if not necessary :)
