Cuando viajamos a la India por nuestra cuenta tenemos la oportunidad de utilizar varios medios de transportes adaptándonos a las necesidades del momento. De este modo conocemos el país de una forma más profunda ya que muchos de estos transportes son los comunmente usados por los nativos y nos permite conocerlos mejor, interactuar y aprender de ellos. Esto vale para TODOS LOS PAISES QUE VISITEMOS.
Uno de los medios de transportes más famoso y popular es el TREN.
When we travel to India on our own we have the opportunity to use various transportation as per the needs of the moment. Thus we know the country in a more deep way because many of these transports are commonly used by the natives and allows us to meet them, interact and learn from them. This applies to ALL COUNTRIES WE VISIT.
One of the most famous and popular transports in India is the TRAIN.
No es fácil conseguir asiento y los lugareños los compran con varias semanas de anticipación. Pero el gobierno destina varios lugares en las lineas más populares turisticamente (no los más baratos) para los extranjeros, lo que nos permite comprar el pasaje un día antes de la salida. De todos modos viajar en tren es muy económico y los lugares más baratos siempre están abarrotados y bastante caóticos. Conviene sólo para viajes muy cortos.
It's not easy to get seats and the locals buy them several weeks in advance. But the government give some places in the most popular lines (not the cheapest) for foreigners, allowing us to buy the ticket one day before departure. Anyway rail travel is very affordable and the cheapest places are always crowded and very chaotic. They are only good for very short trips.

Por lo general hay una oficina destinada a atender a los turistas, bien organizada y rápida. Si en la ciudad que te encuentras no la hay, bueno, a tomar coraje y comprar el pasaje como todo el mundo, haciendo una fila muy poco convencional y tratando de que no se te adelanten todos a empujones. Las estaciones son muy concurridas así que debemos llegar con la mente clara y derecho a nuestro objetivo: la oficina para turistas. ¡a no confundirla con una agencia de turismo! muchos van a tratar de engañarnos conduciendonos, "porque nos quieren ayudar sin ningún interes personal" ,a "la oficina" que en realidad es una agencia para vendernos un tour (a veces marean tanto que ni nos damos cuenta qué estamos comprando) Tampoco nos dejemos engañar por el UNIFORME. Que lleven un uniforme que parece de la estación puede ser parte del engaño (me pasó a mí, por suerte me dí cuenta a tiempo)
Preguntar antes en el hotel, a un policía, u otro turista.
Usually there is a ticket office for tourists, well organized and quick. If there is not in the city you are, well, take courage and buy a ticket like everyone else, lining up very unconventional and trying others not to "steal your place" pushing. The stations are very busy so we must arrive with a clear mind and to go right to our goal: the tourist office. Don´t confuse it with a travel agency! Many will come to you trying to lead you, "because he wants to help without any personal interest", to "the office" which will be in reality an agency for selling you a tour (sometimes they are so dizzy that we cannot see what we are buying) Don´t be fooled by the UNIFORM. Sometimes they wear an uniform that looks like the station´s uniform but it is part of the scam (it happened to me, luckily I realized in time)
Ask before at the hotel, a policeman, or other tourists.

Very nice explanation about the Indian Railways. You can see the huge number of people traveling by these trains. In the last photo you can see the image of a lady is painted on the compartment this shows that this compartment is reserved for the ladies and men are not allowed in that.
