Carcassonne is a historic walled city on a hill. Declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco is among the most visited places in France.Formed by largely preserved buildings from the Middle Ages, its aura of fantasy tale is given by the fact that it was restored for tourism purposes in the later nineteenth century when there were added details that are more like a fanciful idea of the French Middle Ages.

It is visited by 4 million tourists every year, mostly in the European summer (July-August) so that would not be the best time to go, although it is just in summer season when we have the opportunity to live some extraordinary experiences such as be spectators of a contest of knights, medieval tournament where fighters on horseback show their skill and courage to the King and eventually to a beautiful young lady :) The entrance to the fortified town is free but for these shows you must pay a ticket.

Inside there are many restaurants and souvenir shops (besides the castle and museums) which to my taste is a little disappointed, it gives a very artificial aspect to the environment :(

You can rent a full medieval costume very good made but expensive for an hour. Maybe next time ... hehe (you can also buy it if you would want to take it home)

Carcassonne is not limited to the Cité (the name given to the fortified city) The quieter Ville Basse (lower town) founded in the thirteenth century also worth a visit plus it is a good alternative if you look for deals on lodging and cheaper restaurants.

Finally I recommend to spend at least one night in the walled city or out, in the Ville Basse because a one day visit is only half of this trip. The fort is beautifully illuminated at dusk, when most of the tourists are retired and we can peacefully enjoy, finally, with its ancient walls:
