Marco Polo went to China in 1271. He was one of the first Western Adventurers in history. In his TRAVEL DIARY he describes the wonders he found in his way in 17 years of pilgrimage for China. One of these wonders is Luguo Bridge, is also known as the Marco Polo Bridge because it was named in his book. Very few foreign tourists visit this bridge even it is only 15 kilometres from Beijing. Personally I think it's exciting to walk in a place that definitely Marco Polo visited. To observe the 281 small stone sculptures depicting lions. Each sculpture has several lions of different sizes. Some are very small. The posture of each lion is variable. Not all of these sculptures were there at the time Marco Polo visited the bridge but to be in front of them is like being part of the life of a man as exceptional as was this Venetian from the XIII century..
For going to this bridge we took a local bus. It was not difficult to find the bus stop. We knew it is near to the Temple of Heaven (another of the wonders to be visited in Beijing) We asked some people on the street and we were guided by signs. Very few Chinese speak English so a way to be understood is to write in a paper with Chinese characters the name of the place we want to go and to show them (for knowing more please click here) Then you have to use a little of imagination :) The buses usually have electronic displays that you will indicate the name of the stops. Everything is written in Chinese so the piece of paper with the name of the place written in Chinese is also very useful to get off the bus. This bridge is visited mostly by local tourists because it is very important in Chinese history as it marks the beginning of the participation of China in the WORLD WAR II. In my case Marco Polo took me there. It is good to visit tourist highlights but sometimes these little treasures make the difference in a trip.
